Frequently Asked Questions | Qahwat Al'ard
We get a lot of great questions from fellow coffee lovers. Below you'll find answers to the most common ones about who we are, what we offer, and how we get exceptional coffee from the land to your cup.
What does "Qahwat Al'ard" mean, and what is the brand about?
Qahwat Al'ard (قهوة الأرض) translates to "Coffee of the Land." We are a US-based specialty coffee brand headquartered in Hayward, California, and our mission is to honor coffee at its source. We bring authentic, origin-driven beans from renowned growing regions around the world to people who value real quality, full traceability, and sustainability in every cup.
Where does Qahwat Al'ard source its coffee beans?
We source single-origin beans from some of the world's leading coffee-growing estates across Colombia, Kenya, Uganda, Sumatra, Peru, Bali, Mexico, and more. Our roots trace back to the cultural and historical birthplace of coffee in Ethiopia and Yemen. Every origin is chosen for its distinct flavor profile, and we share provenance details on each product page so you can connect what you taste to where and how the coffee was grown.
What does "roasted to order" mean, and why does it matter?
Roasted to order means we don't roast your coffee until you place your order. Coffee freshness peaks roughly 7 to 21 days after roasting; beyond that window, oils oxidize and aromatics fade. By roasting on demand, we ensure your beans arrive at their flavor peak rather than sitting on a shelf losing character.
How can I verify the traceability of my coffee?
Each product page lists the sourcing region, processing method, and roast profile for that specific offering. Our green coffee is roasted in tracked batches, and packaging includes the roast date along with lot references that link back to the original sourcing record. You can also read more about our bean-to-cup traceability approach on our Coffee Journal blog.
What products does Qahwat Al'ard offer beyond whole-bean coffee?
In addition to single-origin beans and blends, we carry sample packs (great for exploring new origins), specialty coffee pods, premium tea, and curated gift sets. We also offer coffee-inspired lifestyle merchandise, including tees, hoodies, mugs, and hats, for those who want to carry the culture beyond the cup.
What makes your coffee "specialty grade"?
Specialty coffee must score 80 or above on the Specialty Coffee Association's 100-point cupping scale, with zero Category 1 defects in a 300-gram sample. Only about 5 to 10 percent of global Arabica production meets this standard, making it a genuinely scarce product category. We align our sourcing with these criteria so that every bag we sell reflects that level of quality.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes. All coffee and tea orders over $50 within the United States ship free. For orders under that threshold, or for international shipments, shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on destination and package weight.
Does Qahwat Al'ard have a mobile app?
We do. Our companion app is available on both iOS and Android. It gives you a convenient way to browse our collection, place orders, and stay up to date on new releases and origin stories right from your phone.
What is the Coffee Journal blog, and what kind of content does it cover?
The Coffee Journal is our dedicated blog where we share origin stories, brewing guides, industry insights, and deep dives into topics like cup scoring and bean-to-cup traceability. It's written for anyone curious about what goes into a great cup of coffee, from first-time specialty drinkers to seasoned enthusiasts.
How should I store my coffee to keep it fresh?
Store your beans in an airtight container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid the refrigerator or freezer for daily-use bags, as temperature fluctuations can introduce condensation and dull the flavor. Our bags feature a one-way valve that lets CO₂ escape as fresh beans degas without allowing oxygen back in, so they're designed to protect freshness from the moment they leave our roastery.
